Teaching Mathematics – Year Group Specific Training in E.London

This Teaching Year Group Specific Maths training is a 3-Part Programme, focusing on classroom pedagogy and progressive subject knowledge of key elements of the curriculum, allowing hands-on practise and discussion throughout the sessions and the gap tasks. It also includes stretch and challenge, assessment and moderation to empower teachers to ensure their pupils make or exceed expected progress and reach their mathematical potential.

• Do you want to improve the planning and teaching of mathematics in your year group and receive some quality teacher learning opportunities to support you and your team?
• Have you changed the year group that you teach and have concerns about the maths content?
• Have you returned to a year group that you’ve not taught for a while and need to ‘brush up’ on your knowledge and understanding of some key areas of maths before planning and teaching these in class?
• Are you an ECT in your first teaching role looking for some in-depth mathematics training?
• Are you an HLTA that usually teaches a different Key Stage and now need to cover classes outside of your ‘comfort zone’?
• Are you an intervention teacher (in KS1, KS2 or KS3) wondering how best to teach children that did not reach the expected standard in the previous year?

PART 1 (autumn 2025)   Two half days, one in each of autumn 1 and autumn 2 (1.00 – 4.00pm)

Focussing on:

• Key areas of mathematics, e.g. place value; calculation; fractions; geometry
• Teaching number facts
• Year group expectations and how this links to planning
• Gap task

PART 2 (spring 1 2026)   Half day (1.00 – 4.00pm)

Focussing on:

• Gap task follow-up and new gap task
• Stretch and challenge – what does Greater Depth look like and how can we enable pupils to reach it? Teaching problem-solving strategies and adaptation of everyday questions to ensure most able pupils are appropriately challenged.
• Assessment of Greater Depth – including a book look – what to look for and is it there yet?

PART 3 (spring 2 2026)   Half day (1.00 – 4.00pm)

Focussing on:

• Gap task follow-up – sharing of successes, good practice; own next steps
• Practical elements of measures and statistics and how to make this learning purposeful
• Assessment and moderation – making accurate judgements and identifying next steps in pupils’ learning
• Prioritising planning for the final term – how to fit it all in, including intervention needs

This Teaching Year Group Specific Maths training is a 3-part training programme with Part 1 across two afternoons  with the intention that teachers attend both afternoons, as this is where the bulk of the number curriculum is covered, including place value, teaching number facts and calculation, as well as fractions and geometry. Part 1 is specific to a single year group, Parts 2 and 3 are in phases. For Years 5 & 6 this is phased for all three parts.

Audience: Any teachers who would benefit from focussed maths training, including those new to the year group and ECTS; HLTAs and intervention teachers. Teachers who missed any part last year that wish to complete the full programme are welcome to join the relevant part of the programme this year.

Time: 1.00 – 4.00pm

Cost of the full programme per participant: £430 for all 3 parts (4 half days)

1. Part 1 (or Parts 1a and 1b): £240.00 (Invoice will be sent after Part 1a)
2. Part 2: £120
3. Part 3: £120
