This Teaching Year Group Specific Maths training is a 3-Part Programme, focusing on classroom pedagogy and progressive subject knowledge of key elements of the curriculum, allowing hands-on practise and discussion throughout the sessions and the gap tasks. It also includes stretch and challenge, assessment and moderation to empower teachers to ensure their pupils make or exceed expected progress and reach their potential.

3-Part Programme

PART 1 (autumn 2023)   Two afternoons or one full day (venue dependent)

Focussing on:

  • Key areas of mathematics, e.g. place value; calculation; fractions; geometry
  • Teaching number facts
  • Year group expectations and how this links to planning
  • Gap task

PART 2 (spring 1 2024)   Half day (1.00 – 4.00pm)

Focussing on:

  • Gap task follow-up and new gap task
  • Stretch and challenge – what does Greater Depth look like and how can we enable pupils to reach it? Teaching problem-solving strategies and adaptation of everyday questions to ensure most able pupils are appropriately challenged.
  • Assessment of Greater Depth – including a book look – what to look for and is it there yet?

PART 3 (spring 2 2024)   Half day (1.00 – 4.00pm)

Focussing on:

  • Gap task follow-up – sharing of successes, good practice; own next steps
  • Practical elements of measures and statistics and how to make this learning purposeful
  • Assessment and moderation – making accurate judgements and identifying next steps in pupils’ learning

Prioritising planning for the final term – how to fit it all in, including intervention needs.
